This stamp commemorates 100 years of the Danske Sømandskirke, originally translated as The Danish Association for the Proclamation of the Gospel to Scandinavian Sailors in Foreign Ports but latterly more like the caption above. The first Danish sailors’ priest started working in Hull, England in 1868, with the first Danish church consecrated there in 1871. By 1900, there were priest in Hamburg, London, Newcastle and New York, reflecting the main trade routes from Denmark to the wider world. In 2004, the Seamen’s Church organisation merged with a similar organisation supporting students, young travellers and others away from home.
