I could probably fill a full month with Olympics related stamps – they’re a recurring theme from nations across the world. This lovely one comes from Yemen and celebrates the Winter Olympics of 1968, held in Grenoble, France. Stars of the Games included French skier Jean-Claude Killy who won three gold medals and Amercian ice skater Peggy Fleming (the stamp may well be a portrait of Fleming but it’s not labelled so I can’t say for sure).
The 1968 Winter Games featured the first participation by separate teams representing East and West Germany, the Berlin Wall having gone up in 1967; the first use of drug and gender testing; and the first mascot, a curious punctuation mark on skis called Schuss.
