Prague in then Czechoslovakia hosted the 12th European Athletic Championships in August – September 1978. Around 850 athletes from 30 countries competed, but a quick look at the list of medal winners suggests a strong concentration of success in for several countries that no longer exist: the Soviet Union, East Germany, West German, Yugoslavia.
There was success for Italy in the Men’s 100m and 200m, and some highlights for Great Britain in Men’s Middle Distance running. The winning time in the Mens 100m was 10:27, which compares with 9:95 at the last European Championships held in Berlin in 2018. By contrast, to win the Women’s Shot Putt needed a throw of 21.47m, compared to just 19.33m in Berlin. (I say “just”, but that’s still a really long way…)
