From a set of evangelists from 1961, here’s Matthew. The New Testament records that he was a follower of Jesus and a witness to the Ascension of Jesus. He may have been a publican or a tax collector by trade. He may or may not have preached the Gospel in Judaea and other countries. In fact, it’s not even his gospel. The Gospel according to Matthew is ascribed to him but his name was only attached later. As St Matthew, he is celebrated on 21 September in the Western Christian calendar and is the patron saint of accountants, bankers, civil servants, perfumers and, strangely, the town of Salerno, Italy.
