Spathoglottis Plicata (Malaysia 1965)

Apologies to regular visitors for the lack of a stamp yesterday – sometimes the day just runs away with you… Back today with this lovely floral stamp from Malaysia. The colours in the photo don’t do justice to the actual stamp: the pinks really glow on the page.

So, spathoglottis plicata is more commonly known as the Philippine Ground Orchid and even more commonly as the Large Purple Orchid. It is found in tropical and subtropical Asia, Australia and the Western Pacific. The list of countries given on the Wikipedia page doesn’t include Malaysia (other websites do include Malaysia), but the good news is that the Large Purple has come off the UN’s vulnerable list, so things are going OK.

Plicata comes from the Greek word for folded, hence pleats, and gives you a good idea of the orchid itself.
