Pictured here we have the Cittadella of Victoria on the island of Gozo, known locally as Ghawdex. First confession: I thought Malta was only one island, so I have learnt something already… Let’s see what else we can find…
The site of the citadel has been inhabited since the Bronze Age and was home to a sizeable Roman city. The medieval citadel was built as a refuge for the population in times of strife (frequent), but its defenses were obsolete by the 16th century. This was demonstrated when the Citadel was sacked by the Turks in 1551. More rebuilding and fortification, then discussion about demolition, then a period of quiet repose. It was demilitarised in 1868 and is now a World Heritage Site.
Honestly, the Wikipedia page is truly worth a read as it gives some fascinating stuff about the history of Malta. It’s making me want to visit…
