The Cape of Good Hope Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was established on 20 May 1872, the first such society in South Africa. It was founded by a Mr Beebers, about whom the internet is silent. The internet also doesn’t give me much about Gordon Cunningham, designer of this stamp and others. I hope that both Beebers and Cunningham shared a fondness for cats.
South Africa’s National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded in 1955 to bring together and coordinate the work of the local societies.
