So I’m stretching the Christmas theme a little further today, but a general wintriness is OK, right? This is one of a set of stamps issued in Hungary (then under Soviet control) celebrating the Winter Olympics of 1972. Said Olympics were held in Sapporo, Japan, and were the first winter games to be held in Asia.
35 nations participated in the Games. Hungary only sent one athlete, figure skater Zsuzsa Almassy, who finished 5th. She was a five time Hungarian national champion, 3 time European medallist and world bronze medallist in 1969.
As a random skiing note, these were the last Games at which a skier won a gold medal on all-wooden skis. After this point, fibreglass became the norm.
