Leif Eriksson (United Arab Emirates, 1972)

Part of a series of stamps based on European footballers, this one introduces Leif Eriksson, Swedish midfielder. Leif’s professional career ran from the early 1960s to the early 1980s, and included periods playing in Sweden, France and Denmark. He was voted best foreign player in the French league in 1972. He played for Sweden 49 times, scoring 12 goals. He also played bandy which is an ice, sticks and ball sport similar to ice hockey.

Internet information on Leif is kind of limited – we can learn about him through the names of football teams and through statistics about games played and goals scored. So I can’t give you any insight into how he played: was he a tough guy? A strong leader? A team player? Nor can I tell you what he’s done since he retired from football. He’s 78 years old now, and I hope he’s keeping well.
