The spiny murex is a species of sea snail, native to the seas around New Zealand and Tasmania. The shell grows to roughly 3.5 – 6.5cm long, so it’s a tiny critter floating in a big ocean. Spines are distributed around the shell and act as a defence against predators. They tend to be shorter for murex living in shallower waters and longer in the deep.
