Apples (India, 1980)

India is the 5th largest producer of apples in the world, with more than 3/4 of the country’s crop being produced in Kashmir. Climate change is affecting the growing patterns and productivity of many of the country’s growing regions, however, so there are increasing imports of apples from Japan, the US and elsewhere.

Apples have played an important part in mythology and symbolism across many cultures. The Biblical story of Adam and Eve is based on a story from the Hindu Rigveda. In the Hindu tale, two birds sit on a fruit tree (possibly a fig rather than an apple): one, representing humanity, eats the fruit; the other, representing the Supreme Being, does not. The birds are Atam and Jiva… those names seem familiar too…
