Laouto (Greece, 1975)

The lauoto is a long-necked, fretted musical instrument found in Greece and Cyprus. It’s part of the lute family and usually played as an accompanying instrument rather than being the star of the show. It’s quite a highly strung little thing, giving it a bright tone, rather than the deeper bassy tones of many other lute-relatives which are also found in and around Greece.

My selections on this site are normally “random-ish” – picking a different country or part of the world, and trying not to get caught in the same themes. Today’s has a slightly personal motivation: this would have been the date of the Eurovision Song Contest but, you know, global pandemics…
