Yellowtail Snapper (Gambia, 1971)

So this one’s easy, right? This is a yellowtail snapper from The Gambia. It’s literally written on the stamp… If only life were that simple…

The Internet of True Facts tells me that the Yellowtail Snapper is native to the western Atlantic and the Caribbean and that it doesn’t look much like the one in the picture. (If you don’t believe me, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowtail_snapper).

Which means we have a mystery fish… Luckily the web provided me with a free PDF of The Common Marine and Inland Fish Species of The Gambia. So I searched that for the other word on the stamp: kakolibo.

Lo and behold, the kakolibo is listed as the Jewelfish – check it out at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_jewelfish – IT’S A COMPLETLEY DIFFERENT FISH…!

Now when I look to the top of this page at the beautifully rendered aquatic marvel, I can’t help but feel that it’s mocking me.
