Dedicated followers of this website will know that this is the second appearance of a member of the buffalo family. Where previously we met the wild buffalo of Sri Lanka, today we say hi to what is most likely a cape buffalo from Rwanda / Burundi. (My buffalo identification skills are in development…)
I was curious about the designation Ruanda Urundi. It turns out this was the name given to a territory, once part of German East Africa, ruled by Belgium from 1922 to 1962. Part of the legacy of that period were the class and social divides which led to Rwanda’s vicious civil ware in the 1990s.
In 1962, independence reverted to the two nations that existed prior to the Scramble for Africa and that we know now: Rwanda and Burundi.
