Norman Manley was a campaigner, politician and leader in Jamaica and is recognised as a National Hero. He campaigned for workers’ rights in the 1930s and universal suffrage (granted in 1944). He supported Jamaica’s membership of the Federation of the West Indies but, when the groundswell of opinion moved towards Jamaican independence, he called the referendum which led towards it and chaired the committee which negotiated that independence. He was the first Premier of Jamaica (from 1959-1962) with a strong focus on education, workers’ rights and land reform.
