This brown bear was part of a set of stamps relating to Budapest Zoo. Brown bears used to be relatively common in Eurasia and North America, but have gradually died out or been hunted in many of their original homes. Greater restrictions on human behaviour have enabled populations to increase; there are now an estimated 17,000 in Europe. Sightings in Hungary are increasing.
